Overview

The OASIS Web Services Distributed Management TC is defining two sets of specifications: Web Services Distributed Management: Management Using Web Services(MUWS) and Web Services Distributed Management: Management Of Web Services (MOWS) specifications.

Technical Work Produced by the Committee

WSDM Primers

The WSDM TC has published committee drafts of primers for WSDM 1.0 to help developers understand how the work with WSDM manageable resources and manageable Web services. Currently there are three WSDM Primer documents:

WSDM Introduction - Committee Draft - An introduction to the architectural tenents of WSDM. This is a great place to start if you are new to WSDM.
WSDM MUWS Primer - Committee Draft - a primer for devlopers of manageable resources and managers of resources. This primer takes you step by step through the process of building up a simple manageability service for a PDA. The primer then walks you through building a WSDM manageable resource client for a manager.
WSDM MOWS Primer - Committee Draft - a primer for devlopers of Web services as manageable resources and managers of WSDM manageable Web services. This primer takes you step by step through the process of building up a simple manageability service for a Weather station Web service. The primer then walks you through building a WSDM manageable resource client for a manager.
WSDM Primer XML documents and samples - Committee Draft - XML documents used in the exeamples in the Primers

WSDM 1.1 OASIS Standard Specifications

WSDM is pleased to announce the approval of the WSDM 1.1 specifications August 01, 2006. Key changes between WSDM 1.0 and WSDM 1.1 - Normatively depends on standard versions of WS-RF, WS-Notification, and WS-Addrssing - Adds WSDM Event Format fields to MUWS Part 2 to support internationalization and additional message context - Adds Per Operation metrics to WSDM MOWS - Web Services Distributed Management: Management Using Web Services (MUWS 1.1) Part 1
- Web Services Distributed Management: Management Using Web Services (MUWS 1.1) Part 2
- Web Services Distributed Management: Management of Web Services (WSDM-MOWS) 1.1

The standard specifications and the related schema and WSDL files are in a zip file.

The individual files are available separately for WSDM 1.1 OASIS Standard:

MUWS 1.1 Part 1 Specification
MUWS 1.1 Part 2 Specification
MOWS 1.1 Specification
MUWS and MOWS 1.1 XML Schemas and WSDL documents
No Erratas available at this time

WSDM 1.0 Standard Specifications

These specifications make direct and indirect normative references to evolving specifications in OASIS and W3C. The WSDM TC intends to move to referencing the standard specifications as they become available. WSDM 1.1, currently under Public Review, refers to the standard versions of its dependent specifications.

- Web Services Distributed Management: Management Using Web Services (MUWS 1.0) Part 1
- Web Services Distributed Management: Management Using Web Services (MUWS 1.0) Part 2
- Web Services Distributed Management: Management of Web Services (WSDM-MOWS) 1.0

The standard specifications and the related schema and WSDL files are in a zip file.

The individual files are available separately:

MUWS 1.0 Part 1 Specification
MUWS 1.0 Part 1 Schema
MUWS 1.0 Schema
MUWS 1.0 Part 2 Specification
MUWS 1.0 Part 2 Schema

Additional Information

Interoperability events

The WSDM TC is conducting a public interopability demonstration event at Enterprise Management World in Bethesda, MD on Sept 14th (http://www.emwusa.com/agenda.html). Five vendors are participating, DataPower, HP, Hitachi, IBM, and Tibco. The scenario involves two managers managing 5 different Weather Station Web services and a Weather Station Client.

In addition, the WSDM TC conducted a successful internal interopability testing event at the WSDM April F2F. Six vendors participated, CA, Dell, Data Power, HP, Hitachi, IBM, and Tibco.
-Overall, We had 10 resources and 4 managers, giving 33 manager/resource combinations of which 6 were unattempted. 27 manager/resource combinations were attempted and had some level of interoperability success. -218 acts were defined, of which 145 were attempted, of which 113 were successful and 32 were not successful.
-67% of acts defined were attempted. 52% of all acts defined were tested successfully. 78% of all acts attempted were tested successfully

WSDM TC Position on dependencies:

The WSDM TC understands concerns with the WSDM V1.0 dependency on non standard versions of specifications. However, the TC believes that there is an industry need for standards for management using Web services and management of Web services that are implementable today. WSDM 1.0 is first industry standard that meets this need. The WSDM TC made WDSM 1.0 based on explicit versions of the specification in order to eliminate any ambiguity with regard to what it is dependent on and therefore ensure that WSDM is fully implementable and interoperable. The TC did ensure that that the references are not in violation of OASIS policy.

The WSDM TC is expecting standard versions of these dependent specifications; therefore the TC will create a new version of the WSDM specifications to refer to the standard and, if necessary, make changes to WSDM specification to come into compliance. Any updated versions of the WSDM specifications will be put though the normal OASIS standardization process. Many companies are implementing and looking forward to the upcoming interoperability activity.

These specifications are referred to in a normative way. WSDM can not be implemented without using them.
